Traits & Characteristics

Bouviers can make great pets, if you have the room and the time to devote to their training early on. They are adorable puppies and grow very quickly into a big, loving presence in your life. In general, they are calm and sociable around people and other dogs you are comfortable being around. Bouviers have strong watchdog tendencies and can be quite intimidating by their size and hairy coats covering their eyes. Take care and everyone will be just fine.

Tasks and challenges make these intelligent, powerful dogs happy. They were bred to work around the farm; herding cows and sheep, pulling carts and other jobs that required brains and brawn. The French name of the breed means, literally, "Cow Herder of Flanders", referring to the Flemish origin of the breed.
